Jonathan Davis was born in Bakersfield, California on January 18th, 1971.
Jonathan went to Highland High Schoolthe same high school as Beavis and Butthead. Jon hung out with the so-called freaks and misfits in school. He frequented gay clubs. He still does.
When Jonathan was sixteen, his father "found" Jesus and saved himself. His father used to be big band keyboardist, and owned a music store. The priests made his dad burn Jons Motley Crue posters and tapes. At the time of his religious discovery was when his father began dissing Jons love for music, though he had been an avid supporter to that point.
The first show Jonathan had gone to was in L.A. to see Cradle of Thornsyears later they were signed to Jons record label Elementree under the name of Videodrone.
Jon thought that Fieldy was an asshole throughout his childhood, because Fieldy used to make fun of him.
Jonathan grew up in Bakersfield where his brother Mark says "there's nothing to do but drugs and drink and fuck".
Also when16, he became a coroners assistant at the Coroners Department in Kern County. He went on to graduate at the San Francisco School of Mortuary Science. "I had a sick obsession with embalming and autopsies, but I didnt want to fuck the corpses or nothing. I just got off on cutting people open. I could do things that serial killers did and get paid for it. I could hack up the bodies." "I cut up people that I knew: drug overdoses, car accidents, a guy that died when a typewriter fell on his head. That kind of stuff shows you you could die at any minute. It helps you to live for the moment; appreciate your life."
Jonathan, about the morgue: "A motherfucker fucked dead bodies. This guy, he was a freak. Every time Id go to the mortuary to drop off bodies, he was all [creepy voiced], Hi, Jonathan, how are you? Come here And hed always be rubbing me."
After seeing victims of car crashes, suicides, and sexual abuse-including people he had known or talked to the day before-he suffered post-traumatic stress disorder and has nightmares to this day, one of which is exorcised in the Follow the Leader song "Pretty," about a young incest victim.
Jonathan earned his nickname "HIV" after the "faget" term he was dubbed in high school. Jonathan stood apart from his peers because of his different style of dress, mimicking his pop star idols Duran Duran. Jonathan does not however have AIDS or the HIV virus.
Spend any time with Davis and one is likely to be subjected to an endless barrage of queer references and gay jokes. Just watch Deuce. But what might initially come across as small-town homophobia turns out to be something more, a by-product of a lifetime of sexual confusion. One Davis-penned song, entitled "Faget," reflects on time spent as a Duran Duran-loving New Romantic, when the singer would don makeup and hang out in gay bars. "Everyone thought I was gay my whole life," says Davis, "so I have to joke about it just to deal with it."
As a reminder Jonathan has "HIV" tattooed on his upper left arm. "That tattoo has probably saved my life. You know in situations when passion and lust take over your brain.... I take a look at that tattoo and I remember that the virus is out there and you never know who's got it" says Jonathan.
Jonathan wasnt even baptized as a Catholic until his mothers remarriage. "I dont believe in organized religionI dealt with them hand in hand, and a whole bunch of Catholic priests tried to molest me. Telling me I was gay and I should go home with them and stuff."
On his upper right arm is a tattoo of a crazed bishop ripping up his skin. "The bishop is a symbol of the atrocities that religion is making. He's ripping up my skin to reveal Christ. It's more of a symbol of how corrupt religion is. I don't believe in any of it because of shit like televangelism. Do you really think that all that money really goes to charity?" "Before I got in KoRn, I tried out to be Jesus Christ just so I could face his ass." says Jonathan of the show Jesus Christ Superstar. "He was such an asshole to me, but it still made me cry to watch him hang by his neck."
Jon swapped his coroners job to a steady diet of Top Ramen and a garage at Long Beach when he made the try-out for Creep. His father cried when he helped him moved his stuff and has been quoted as saying later that he was happy that his son was at least "chasing his dreams." After Creep, Jonathan went on to join the band Sex Art as lead singer. It was in this band that he was spotted by Munky and Head at a local club. They asked him to try out for their band, which was then called L.A.P.D.. Jonathan went and tried out. "I didn't want to do it. I went to a psychic and she told me I was stupid if I didn't do it" he says. And so, KoRn was born. Within two weeks of Jons arrival, the band recorded versions of "Predictable", "Daddy", "Blind", and "Alive." They entitled this demo Neidermeyers Mind. Paul Pontius (the A&P rep for Immortal Records) waited through four KoRn shows as a silent observer before confronting the band.
In Long Beach Jon befriended a speed dealer. "Its just about being up," he explained. "If I didnt have to sleep, Id love it. If I could just stay awake and there was no such thing as sleepingtheres not enough time."
"Id wake up in the morning and do a line," Jonathan says of his speed addiction. "Speed in the morning, Id have it all lined up for breakfast so when Id lay down and go to sleep, Id wake up and just snort and its like, Yeah, okay, Im up. It was bad. Its like, you do one line and stay up all night, but then you have shit to do the next day so you have to do another line to be able to keep staying up to get that shit done. Eventually you start spinning out from sleep deprivation." Helmet in the bush was written about Jon's speed addiction.
To write lyrics for the first KoRn record, Jon returned to Bakersfield and wrote lyrics at an old recording studio called Fat Tracks. "I like being miserable. I guess Im punishing myself. I guess I punish myself everyday. I dont knowI havent really analyzed myself lately. I just like the pain."
Jonathan's lyrics have created nothing short of controversy and many of his songs come from the people around him, including his stepmother who is the subject of the song "Kill You", about how she constantly harassed, punished, and tormented him, and the appropriately titled "Mr. Rogers" which was originally to be called "Be My Neighbor", a song which was inspired by the television show Mr. Rogers.
"When I was a little kid watching Mr. Rogers, that shit was scary. He was a freaky old man... Land of Make believe and Mr. fuckin McFeely and shit... made me sick. So back when I was doing speed, like for 5 or 6 days I'd be trippin out and my brain would start to get freaky and get schizophrenic and stuff, and I'd tape it and watch it everyday over and over... I don't know, I was sick in the head. As a kid he told me to be polite and all it did was get me picked on. I fucking hate that man. Thanks for making me polite and trusting everyone, and easy to take advantage of. So I spent 3 months on that one song, just tweakin' on it, and it was totally just my Mr. Rogers obsession, about how evil I thought he was. Pretty much drug induced."
And as for the much discussed "Daddy" from KoRn's debut album, Davis says "People think Daddy was written because my dad fucked me up the ass, but that's not what the song's about. It wasn't about my dad or my mom. When I was a kid I was being abused by someone else and I went to my parents and told them about it. They thought I was lying and joking around, so they never did shit about it. They didn't believe it was happening to their son. I don't like to talk about that song, this is the most I've ever talked about it."
When Daddy was recorded Jonathan became so emotional that they left the tape rolling. At the end of the song you can hear a door creaking. That's Jonathan walking out of the sound studio. Daddy has only been performed live once (entirely), but Jonathan became too emotional and so they stopped playing.
At a young age Jonathan went through the painful ordeal of parental divorce. His father Rick later remarried.
Considering that Jonathan has portrayed his father as an abusive enemy of all that he was and wanted to be, the two seem to get along surprisingly well. When asked about "Dead Bodies Everywhere," about how he didn't want his son to be a musician.
"Initially there was some nervousness on my part," he says of first hearing songs describing his relationship with his son.
"But it forced us to sit down and go over all the issues and resolve them. And we did, didn't we?"
"Yeah," says Jonathan obediently.
"I had lost everything in bankruptcy, and I was going through a divorce, and at the moment I looked at my son and said, 'Always have a day job to fall back on.' And fortunately he didn't listen to me. But everything's okay now."
"We were both fucked up." Jonathan concedes.
"I still remember when I drove back home after you moved to Long Beach," his dad says. "When I saw you were living in one corner of a garage, you have no idea how many buckets I cried driving home. But I thought, at least he's pursuing his dream.
"I'll be damned," dad continues, "now you're a little drunk in front of your kid, making music and touring all the time, just like I was."
Jonathan says "Since I was 13, all we talked about was pussy. It wasn't until I started writing songs about him that we started talking about all that other stuff. He's not that bad now. But at that time it felt horrible. When he asks me, 'I wasn't a bad dad, was I?' What am I going to say? 'You were an asshole'?"
But the truth is that Jonathan now does understand, at least a little. "Ever since I've had a kid I totally have new respect for my dad," he marvels. "He did fuck me over, but I can understand why. When he left to go on the road, he needed to put food on the table. He needed to pay hospital bills: I was asthmatic, I was in the hospital every month from the age of three to the age of ten. When you're three years old you don't think about that shit. It really freaked me out when I left to go to Japan and my son said, 'You got to go work? Bye daddy.' Then he rolled over, like 'don't talk to me' It hurt my feelings more than anything in the world."
In November 1998 Jonathan married his girlfriend of seven years, Renee. "Man, I gave her a wedding she will never forget! I was fully in all armor and wearing a Kings Crown; she's a fairy. There were all kinds of little fairies and sprites jumping in the trees and shit, it was crazy. Renee came up with it... we were like sitting there and thought wouldn't it be really badass to be all medieval. We saw that film... remember Excalibur? Kinda like that, and she went on from there and did it all up. It was a fuckin' bad-ass wedding...it was definitely dope. People were trippin' the fuck out. Everybody had to dress in costumes and shit so it was just a fun time. The whole thing... the castle we were in and everything... the whole thing was just awesome."
Jonathan has one son, Nathan Houseman Davis, who was born on October 18, 1995. Before the birth of Nathan, Jonathan kept a beeper on him at all times. "This tells me when my childs coming. If Im onstage, I say: Im having a baby now, bye!" "My astrologer told me it was going to be a girl. My little girl has been coming to me in my dreams, and its breaking my fucking heart." He was going to name the little girl Salaam Dementia, but at delivery Jonathan was only slightly surprised to see, as he put it, "pink balls", and he had to come away from the girls name Salaam Dementia. He named his son after his best friend, Nathan Cox. "Im going down the same road my dad did. Its killing me, because Im doing what my dad did to me, in that Im always on the road, but I tell myself that Im making his life better in the future. Hell be pissed off with me, probably get in a band and write songs about me, and that would make me the happiest man in the world."
"I miss Nathan and Renee a lot, but I wouldnt do that to themdragging them all over the world with me would be cruel. Touring is really crazy!! Its such a weird feeling, last time I saw him (Nathan) he was a toddler, and now hes already walking! I love music and I feel I have something to say but sometimes I wonder if it is worth it." Unfortunately, In 2000 Renee and Davis spilt. Though Jon now has a new Fiance' Deven, whom he is very happy with.
Recently Jonathan and Richard Gibbs produced the Soundtrack for "Queen of the Damned"; a movie based on the novel by Anne Rice. Along with The Soundtrack the score of original music was composed by them (great stuff).

Name: Brian Phillip Welch KoRn: Guitar Nickname: Head Born: June 19, 1970 Marital Status: Married Wife: Rebekkah Welch Daughter: Jennea Marie Welch Dog: Bobba |

Brian Welch was born in Torrance, California, on June 19th, 1970. Brian and Munky went to the same school where Brian showed Munky how to play a few songs. They were friends up through high school, and had a friendly sort of competition with each other. Brian would go to Munky's house and jam. If Munky would learn some new material, Brian would be like, "d*mn I got to practice!". Later, Munky joined LAPD, while Brian would just sit around drinking their beer. LAPD decided that they needed a second guitar for when they toured, so Brian went on tour with them. Brian and Munky have been playing together for more than two thirds of their lives.
When asked how he got the nickname "Head", Brian said: "...Because I got a big head... Go get me any hat, and it won't fit." Head's favorite beers are Budweiser and Coors.
Jonathan on the now the infamous KoRn tattoo given to Head by Fred Durst: "He told us hed been tattooing for years, but it turned out it was like his third tattoo! He did a KORN tattoo on Heads backand it looked like HORN."
What Head said he listened to and played when he grew up: "I listened to AC/DC, Motley Crue, and sh*t like that, but I liked everything. Id watch MTV and want to learn a Tom Petty solo or a Cars riff. All those videos my friends hated, Id dig, cause I wanted to do the solos. I never bought the record because Id get laughed at, but Id learn the solo."
Brian "Head" Welch had first wanted to be a drummer like Tommy Lee, but changed his mind when his father told him that a guitar would be easier to carry around.
Queens "Another One Bites the Dust" was the song that made Brian realize that he liked the guitar better than the drums.
Head plays guitar with his back hunched over, because he can't reach the top strings of his 7-string. He says he gets a back ache every night from it :(.
Head brought Rebekkah Ricketts (then his girlfriend) on tour with him. "Its hard, you know, being gone on tour all the time and having a relationship. She has a hard time sometimes. This year Ive seen her a lot. She came out to Europe for ten days, so thats good. We go with it. Its just gets hard sometimes."
Brian's wife is Rebekkah, who recently gave birth to their daughter Jennea Marie, on July 6, 1998. As a result of the birth, KoRn had to drop out of the 1998 OzzFest in Europe. Brian would not travel overseas and be away from his wife at such a crucial time, and the rest of KoRn were set in the fact that they would not use any replacement musicians in any situation if one of them couldn't be on hand due to an extenuating circumstance.

Name: James Christian Shaffer KoRn: Guitar Nickname: Munky Born: June 6, 1970 Marital Status: Single |

|
James Shaffer was born in Rosedale, California, on June 6th, 1970. Munky began his musical career after an accident with his three-wheeler which severed the top of his left index finger. One night while sneaking out to a party and pushing his bike the chain slipped off. He slapped his hand on it so it wouldn't make a noise but his finger got caught and cut the top off.
"The doctor's like..you got to rehabilitate your finger somehow, like take up a musical instrument. And I said..how about guitar..he goes, that's perfect"
Before joining KoRn Munky was in a band named L.A.P.D with Head, David and Fieldy. "Brian (Head) said..oh I know this guy from my high school, so they called me up, and they're like, do you want to come and try out for our band, it wasn't that I could play, it was that I had long hair" says Munky. "I sat down, Brian showed me the songs, and then that's how we all just started playing together". Munky doesn't like to even play live with out Head. And no wonder, two-thirds of Head and Munkys lives were spent together.
The first song Munky learned how to play was "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and took acoustic guitar lessons from a man named Mr. Haas. Until Brian showed him, Munky had no idea what distortion was.
Head sold Munky Munkys first electric guitar "a Peavey Mystic," for three hundred dollarsa total rip-off. Head says, "I played it for a few years and then I made my money back, and then some, on Munky."
Munky: "Brian pretty much inspired me to start playing. I used to go over to his house and eat his mom and dads food so I could save my lunch money and then by an amp." Though Munky started to play a 7 string guitar before Head did.
Munky's favorite band is Bootsy collin, and Mr.Bungle, and his influences is faith no more. On stage Munky is more than often seen wearing a pair of old overalls. "I wanted to wear something on stage that was like kinda trashy, dirty, you know, because when I'm up there I feel like...sick" says Munky. "Really what it is, it's like that person I don't like in me, all the things I hate about myself, that's who I am up there". Munky now sports a spanking clean pair of white overalls with black X's down the chest.
When watching their video "falling away from me," Munky almost cried he was so moved. Munky says this about their music: "Its like were directing our own scary movie."

Name: Reginald Arvizu KoRn: Bass Nickname: Fieldy, Fieldy Snutz (Feel Deez Nuts) Born: November 2, 1969 Marital Status: Married Wife: Shela Arvizu Daughter: Serena Rae Daughter: Olivia |
|
|
|
Reginald Fieldy "Snuts" Arvizu is believed to be born on Nov. 2 in 1970 in CA, on tour. He has a wife named Sheila. He has two children, one daughter, Sarina Rae born September 30, 1997. He is known for his heavy drinking. "Anybody that drinks beer in their band, we're f**king tight friends."
As a child, Fieldy was a weirdo with exotic musical tastes he was into: Afrika-Bambaata and Parliament/Funkadelic.
"My sound is more like a drummer. I'm a percussion-sounding bass player. A lot of times people think that what they're hearing is drums and it's actually in the bass. For instance, when Les Claypool (of Primus) heard some of the new stuff, like "B.B.K.," he said, "That's a pretty cool double kick!" And it wasn't, it was my bass. Fieldy is the only left handed member of KoRn, yet he plays the bass right handed. Plus most of Fieldys bass riffs, are hip hop beats. He says hegets inspiration from any thing hip hop.
On the business side of KORN, I do all the T-shirt designs for KORN, all the merchandise, like the hats and stickers. All the merchandise you see. That's all me. I think everybody could do it. I think everybody's just lazy. So I end up being the one that does it all. I come up with a bunch of designs, show them to the band. They either approve or disapprove."
The only thing that inspires me is hip-hop--all west-coast hip-hop. Not that I favor west-coast or east-cost, but thats just what seems to inspire me. Just the beats and the style.
Fieldys first job was selling plants door to door, and after that cleaned carpets.
Fieldy is known for his alcohol related antics. For instance, on a photo shoot, a bucket had to be found in case he threw up.
Q: What do you like about touring clubs?
A: The free beer.
At the end of May, 1998, Fieldy married his girlfriend, Shela. They have two daughters, Sarina Rae, born on September 30th, 1997, recently had another baby girl.
When he was asked about his nickname, he said: "When I was younger, I had these f**king chipmunk cheeks, right... so they called me 'Gopher', and then it became 'Garf'. Then they started callin' me 'Garfield'. Then it became 'Fieldy'." On the album, his name is Fieldy Snuts. (get it, feel deez nuts)
When asked whether the fans ever become annoying, asking for autographs etc, Fieldy says "think of your favorite band when you were a kid, and they were all like..get away from me.. you'd be crushed".
Fieldy is afraid of flying; in fact, the entire band is. So they all make sure they are very wasted before the flight.
Fieldy's favorite song is Freak on a Leash. When asked what 5 albums he'd like to be stranded on an island with he says "The new KORN record, of course. Chris Rock's live comedy album. The biggest old school hip-hop compilation you could get. So I could have a variety of a bunch of sh*t. Psycho Realm. And Erykah Badu Live."
Fieldy's like to go driving his Mercedes E320, riding in speed boats (hes crashed a few times), and playing Dreamcast. Especially UFC for Dreamcast, with his friend Tito Ortiz. Tito is the current light-weight champion of the UFC, and is the subject of one song on Fieldys Dreams, Ortiz Anthem. Fieldy was on G4TVs players, with Tito.
How Fieldy feels on performing, "Its just intense the whole time, sometimes Ill be walkin offstage and Ill be like throwin upIm throwin up a couple of times onstage, too. Its just because its so intense being up there. Sometimes I will be throwin up before we play, too."
Fieldy recently released his own hip-hop album called "Fieldy's Dreams", in January 2002. He plays all the instruments, along with contributing vocals. The album features many Hip Hop Artists (Helluva, Sondoobie, Tre, Angela Rascoe, RBK, and Polarbear), in addition to guest appearances from every KoRn member. |

Name: David Silveria KoRn: Drums, Percussion Nickname: None Born: September 21, 1972 Marital Status: Divorced X-Wife: Shannon Bellino Son: David Jr. |
|
|
|
David Silveria was born in Bakersfield, California, on September 21st. David grew up with a younger brother named Andy, and 3 older sisters named Darla, Tracy, and Kelly. David's father was fireman for 27 years. He grew up in Bakersfield, where he learned how to play drums at the age of 9. "I think one of the reasons music became such an obsession for everyone in the band is that there just wasn't a whole lot to do where we lived."
James, Brian and Fieldy were looking for a drummer for their band. Fieldy says "I get a message on my answer machine from this kid. David's like f**kin 13... 'hey you guys looking for a drummer'. So we called him up, tried him out...he was f**kin good man" David dropped out of high school to pursue music, and doesnt regret it.
"David was like, so young, he used to have to get his mom to drop him off at practice" says Munky. "They called me up. And I loaded up my drum kit into the car, and took it down to the studio, and it's been there ever since" says David.
David's favorite fast food place is "IN and out burger."
David married Shannon Bellino in April, 1997, and tattooed her first name on his back. They have a son, David Jr., born on August 22, 1997. David supposedly has a penis fetish and usually when he signs things he makes a penis somewhere on it. Along with the aforementioned tattoo of his wife's name, David has three more tattoos: a Cheshire cat, a guy sticking out his tongue that has a drum stick through it, and the KoRn logo. He is described as the shy member of the band.
When Jonathan Davis was asked about signatures from David he said: "He doesn't do that sh*t. He's shy. He like hides." David has a lucrative side job as a model. He has already completed a modeling assignment for skate punk clothing company 26 Red. He proved such a hit that 26 Red's biggest rivals, Grind, have now also contracted Silveria to do a series of ads for them.
Of Jonathans lyrics David says "Personally, I didn't have a bad childhood, but I can relate as far as I've heard other stories and seen so many things that happen. And every time you turn on the TV, you hear the awful things that happen to children. I understand it all even though I didn't have a bad childhood. Some of the other issues...I understand, but he writes a lot about fighting with your own personal insides. I don't really have things like that going on in my head. I'm pretty at ease with myself and with my life."
On Touring Silveria says "It wasnt so bad before, when I didnt really have a home that was my home, with all my belongings in, and when I didnt have a girl waiting for me, when I had nobody I cared about. I wasnt missing anybody. I always miss my family, but Im used to being away from them. So it wasnt that big a deal. Id be out on tour and Id look forward to going home just to get off the road and be able to drive around in my car and hang out with friends. Id miss that. But its different now that I have somebody that I love and Im starting a family with. Its a whole different story. Thats a different kind of missing."
Of David's influences he says "There's music that I like to listen to, but when it comes to writing our music, I don't really get influenced by anyone else's music. I get influenced as we write our music. The part comes up and it influences me to think a certain way about the part and about how to go about writing to it." In addition to KoRn, he occasionaly plays drums with Suicide tendencies, and Infectious Groove.
David's favorite song is B.B.K. When asked what 5 albums he'd like to be stranded on an island with he says "I'd say Filter's "Shortbus," Blondie's "Greatest Hits," Orgy's "Candyass," I guess our new record. Gotta be honest. Um...let me think. Probably Helmet's "Meantime." And Weezer's first album."
